Term 2:
As part of our Social Studies curriculum we will begin by exploring responsibility and sense of self as it relates to our families and communities.
May: Continuing our exploration of communities, students will be looking at structures and mapping. We begin our unit by exploring the story Rosie's Walk and mapping her journey. Next students are asked to consider the needs of a community and design their own community using blocks to review the 2D components of 3D objects which become evident in aerial view (e.g. from above, an apartment building may look like a small square while a shopping centre is a large rectangle). Students will also be asked to draw their own map of our classroom and include specific symbols for reference.
January/February:
In this unit, students will be exploring the various roles and responsibilities of our family members, friends and community members. Students will be introduced to various community roles and be asked to consider the impact each person makes on our society. For example, what would our world be like without garbage collectors? Health care professionals? Firefighters?
Week 20: Jan 29-Feb 2nd
We were so grateful to welcome parents into our class to talk about their jobs as a nurse, custodian, business manager, hairdresser and lab technician. We will be using these presentations for inspiration for our study of roles and responsibilities in the community.
Term 1:
October
This month we finished up our family unit by discussing the differences between our wants and our needs. I need food, shelter, love, sleep etc to live a happy and fulfilled life vs. I want a new toy. Students were encourage to think about how our families care for each other and to consider members of our society who do not have all the things they need. We began collecting items for a food drive to help people who do not have everything they need.
September
As we entered into the new school year, we began by focusing on safety rules as they relate to school: safety in the gym and safety in case of emergency (fire drills, lock down etc.). We used the books "Non, David!" and "David va à l'école" to help us design our own personal safety rule books :)
To help get to know our new classmates, we also began our unit on what makes us unique. We explored families and developped French vocabulary about our family needs and responsibilities with the following song:
« Voici ma famille, ça c’est moi!
Voici ma famille, ça c’est moi!
C’est ma mère (mom), c’est mon père (dad),
C’est ma sœur (sister), c’est mon frère (brother).
Voici ma famille, ça c’est moi! »
Students were encouraged to consider how each family is unique and compared their families to others (I live with mom and dad, I live with mom and my step-dad, I just live with mom, etc.)
